Does God Love the World Unconditionally?

In our eagerness to bring people to Christ, we told them God loves them unconditionally.
What’s wrong with this statement? First of all, the non-believing hearer is likely to misunderstand, thinking he can continue his current way of life without repenting or forsaking his wicked deeds, and that God will still give him eternal life, not realising that God is holy and “He does not leave the guilty unpunished” (Ex 34:7)
Secondly, “unconditional” in the Bible refers to predestination for salvation: before the world was created, God chose a group of people and wrote their names in the Book of Life, predestining them to hear the gospel, believe in Jesus, and receive eternal life. They do not need to meet any specific criteria; they could be God’s worshippers or opposers, good men or evil doers. They are chosen entirely by God’s sovereignty.” I will have mercy on whom I have mercy”(Ro 9:15)
Jesus said in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” God’s love here is the benevolent love of God, i.e God’s goodwill towards His creation, especially towards His image-bearer, the human race, even after man had fallen. This is also known as the common grace of God; such as, God sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous; and God confessed, “I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.” (Eze 33:11) Nevertheless, this does not mean God’s salvation is universal. God has stated clearly the one and only one condition to enter paradise: “All who believe in him” –the only begotten Son of God.
Although God’s salvation is not universal, His call to sinners to be saved is universal and unconditional, extending to the righteous and the wicked alike, all languages or colours, thus showing God’s beneficent love for the world. This is revealed in Christ’s Commission to the church: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Mat 28:19). Whenever the gospel is preached, God is calling sinners to repent. This is known as the “external call.” If a person hears it and rejects it, he will not be saved. For those whose names are found in the Book of Life, God gives an internal call at the appointed time. It is the secret and effective regeneration work of the Holy Spirit, which changes a person’s heart and prompts him to trust in Jesus Christ for God’s salvation. In the final analysis, God’s benevolent love towards the world will lead to a greater judgement for the unrepentant. Because they live in the Creator’s goodwill but did not honour Him as God, thereby accumulating divine wrath for themselves (Ro 1:18). The divine benevolence they received in their lifetime will become a testimony to their rebellion against God!
