The world is his home, the Way is his words, the Lord is his company throughout his pilgrimage of many decades.
Eulogy for Rev Joseph Tong by Elder Tang Yongjie 26 April 2026
“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1The 5:16-18)
“It’s all God’s grace”. This is a phrase that our beloved Pastoral Mentor, Reverend Joseph Tong, often says. Every time I meet him and listen to his teachings and sharing, I could always hear him expressing his gratitude to God. Rev Tong has travelled far and wide, faithfully preaching the Lord’s word for over forty years. He must have encountered many difficulties and challenges, but I have never seen him complain; instead, he is filled with abundant joy and gratitude.
For the past ten over years, God has sent him into our midst to teach us. From systematic theology to church governance, and to Christian life, he poured out all that he had received from God, greatly benefiting the church and the brothers and sisters.
He said, “The Almighty God is never late, nor does He ever make mistakes.” This helps us see that everything happening in the world is in accordance with God’s will; it also encourages us to face everything happening around us with a positive mindset. Be grateful in times of prosperity, and pray to God often in times of adversity, looking up to God for support!
Regarding church governance, he emphasised the need to adhere to biblical principles. The church belongs to God, not to man; God is the head of the church, and man is His servant. Whether pastors, elders, deacons, or church members, all should submit to the church’s ruling and discipline. “Do not leave your position, do not overstep your bounds”—each fulfilling their duty, united in building God’s church.
Regarding the life of Christians in the world, he taught us to be clear about our identity, understand our responsibilities, and ask God for the strength and wisdom to fulfil our duties. He summarised the principles of dealing with people in sixteen characters: “make big things small, make small things disappear, don’t create trouble when there’s none, and don’t fear trouble when it arises.”
Now, God has granted him rest from earthly toil, taking him back to the heavenly home to be with Him. But his spirit of dedication to the Lord and of working diligently will continue to inspire us. Be “not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;” (Romans 12:11)
