Do You Want to Lead Singspiration?
By Rev Tay Piak Kheng — 12 April 2026
“King Jehoshaphat appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the LORD and praising him for his holy splendour, ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures for ever.’” (2 Ch 20:21 NLT)
This passage reveals a marvellous spiritual principle: singing praises is Christ’s soldiers’ charge on the spiritual battlefield! In the book of Revelation, departed saints are seen singing new songs to the Lord with the heavenly hosts in the spiritual realm! Therefore, let us not belittle the power of singspiration in any gathering held in the name of Jesus, even if there are only two or three people. Song leaders must remember they are marching on battlegrounds, lest they sing for self-entertainment. There are four basic attitudes that a song leader must cultivate:
First, always ‘comb’ your mood before leading. Learn to put aside your worries; it is a skill you must master if you desire to serve God long-term.
Second, be willing to hone your singing skills – tune, pronunciation, rhythm, beats, etc. Be open to receiving feedback and corrections.
Third, be willing to learn new songs constantly. Do not limit yourself to the songs you like. Hymns are Christianity’s rich heritage; the Lord uses them mightily.
Fourth, choose the songs prayerfully. After a day of immersing in the corrupted world, a hymn about sin and saving grace is needed to refresh the souls of the saints and to revive their eternal hope. Also, a hymn relating to the theme of the gathering will help prepare God’s people’s hearts to receive the truth. For prayer meeting, it is good to choose a song to remind prayer warriors of the pulpit message of the last or coming Sunday.
Singing arrangement can be flexible as long as it is not chaotic. Practising with the pianist should not be regarded as optional. Last but not least, no matter how familiar you are with the hymns, you should read through the lyrics, meditate on the truth and prepare an introduction to every hymn. That will help people sing with their souls!
Brothers and sisters, song leading is an important aspect of church building. Our Berean Bible School has started a workshop for it. If you enjoy singing, we encourage you to participate. As long as you are willing to equip yourself to lead God’s people in singing praises to Him, the Lord will bestow upon you the gift to do it well for Him. Maybe one day, you will be the song leader at the church’s Gospel rally!
