We Are the Trinity’s Treasured Possession

“All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.” (John 17: 10)

Here, Jesus assures us that He and the Father share an ownership and lordship over us. How comforting and reassuring that we are the treasured possession of the Son and the Father, and are sealed with the Divine Spirit? We are the Trinity’s treasured possession and no one else. The question is: How strong is this awareness in us? Do we see ourself as belonging solely to God?

The Lord was fully aware of the disciples’ impending denial and abandonment when he said these words on the night he was betrayed. Apart from that, their thoughtless questions and interruptions as he spoke to them in the upper room revealed how little they understood their Master’s mission and the gravity of the hour that had now arrived for him and for them. How, then, do we understand when Jesus said, “…and I am glorified in them”? Well, it is because Jesus saw not only their present state of mind but also their future devotion. At this moment, they were indeed weak and unreliable, but with the Father’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, they would faithfully fulfil the great commission even to the point of martyrdom. Jesus was so confident of them that he spoke in the present tense: I am glorified in them.

Dear brothers and sisters, most of the time, Christians expect a perfect church, which is why they often become unhappy with the church. But we are the church. How can the church be perfect when you and I are not? After all, all her flaws come directly from us.

The reason Christ could love the church despite her disappointments is that He looks at who she will become under His providential care—the glorious church without blemishes and wrinkles. This, my dear brothers and sisters, is the way God sees us. God sees our potential, who we will become, and He takes it into account. Every act of obedience increases your potential to honour God. God is pleased to empower you to glorify Him. God can stretch you as He stretched the five loaves and two fish. The question is: Does your heart truly desire to glorify Him?
