My Mother’s Bible

My Mother’s Bibleby American poet George pope Morris (1802-1864)  extracted from Poems and Hymns This book is all that’s left me now,Tears will unbidden start,With faltering lip and throbbing browI press it to my heart. For many generations pastHere is our family tree;My mother’s hands this Bible clasped,She, dying, gave it me. Ah! Well do I remember thoseWhose names these records bear;Who round the hearthstone used to close,After the evening prayer,And speak of what these pages saidIn tones my heart would thrill!Though they…

Are All the Children In?

Are All the Children In?Anonymous extracted from Poems and Hymns I think of times as the night draws nighOf an old house on the hill,Of a yard all wide and blossom-starredWhere the children played at will. And when deep night at last came down,Hushing the merry din,Mother would look all around and ask,“Are all the children in?” ‘Tis many and many a year since then,And the old house on the hillNo longer echoes childish feetAnd the yard is still, so still. And I see…

There Be

There Be An ancient poem by an unknown writter There be prudent prophets all, The Apostles six and six, The glorious martyrs in a row, And confessors in betwixt, And though the glory of each one Doth differ in degree, Yet is the joy of all alike And common, certainly. There David stands with harp in hand, as master of the choir. A thousand times that man were blest That may his music hear. There Mary sings “Magnificat” With tune…
